Top 5 Engagement Ring Trends

Updated: Jul 15, 2021

I don’t mean to date us, but back when we first began selling engagement rings, people still had rotary phones...

They’d use their yellow pages to call us up, and when they did get through, they weren’t asking for Princess Cut diamonds… those hadn’t been invented yet.

In other words, we’ve been around long enough to see a lot of changing styles, and we can tell you, these engagement ring trends are some of the best we’ve ever seen.

Here are 5 of our favorite happenings in the current world of engagement rings:

1. Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are the most exciting thing to happen to diamonds since, well, the discovery of diamonds!

They are Eco-conscious and sustainable, making them a go-to for today’s green-minded couples.

They are every bit as hard, durable, and breathtaking as mined diamonds. (In fact, in every way, both structurally and optically, they are indistinguishable from Earth-grown diamonds.) Speaking of Earth, their impact to the planet is negligible since no actual mining takes place to produce a lab grown diamond.

And if all of that is not enough, lab grown diamonds are often brighter, and less expensive than traditionally-mined stones!

Lab Grown Diamonds aren’t just a trend. They’re a conscientious lifestyle choice, one that we’re proud to have been on board with from their very beginnings.

2. Fancy Cuts

Modern couples are prioritizing personality and practicality in equal measure, and that is why fancy cut diamonds are more popular than ever before.

Technically, a fancy cut is any diamond that isn’t a modern, round brilliant. Unlike round brilliant diamonds, which are cut to universally exacting standards, fancy cut diamonds rely on a diamond cutter’s skill and creativity to achieve their amazing shapes and sparkle.

In the case of fancy cut diamonds, a diamond cutter will have analyzed the raw diamond crystal from every angle and chosen the shape and proportions of the finished stone based on the raw crystal’s specific assets. The benefit is that this allows cutters to retain more of the actual diamond than they would be able to with a round brilliant stone. This means by choosing a fancy cut, you may be able to get a slightly larger stone for your money.

However, the proportions of fancy cut diamonds can vary greatly, and correct proportions are what make a diamond really sparkle. A diamond with poor proportions simply won't have the beauty it should, so it’s incredibly important to only buy fancy cut diamonds from a jeweler you trust completely.

Don’t buy fancies online. You need to see these diamonds in person (and see a lot of them) to be sure the one you’re getting really packs its share of luster and sparkle.

A well-cut fancy is something pretty special so it’s worth taking the time to get a great one.

A fancy cut is a great way to express your personal style, respect your budget, and elevate your ring’s design to breathtaking new heights.

3. Stackable Bridal Sets

The Bridal Set is getting a makeover with stackable rings. We are seeing more and more brides opt for multiple, thin wedding bands that can be stacked in all different configurations around their engagement ring.

Stackables allow brides to change up their style without actually altering their main ring. This is especially beneficial to ladies who like to switch between gold and silver accessories… stackables make another one of this year’s big trends: mixed metals, a total breeze.

4. Color

From statement-making center diamonds, to side stones and bands, 2019 is a year when brides aren’t afraid to bring color to their engagement rings. Personal style has surpassed cultural norms and expectations. Brides are having more and more influence in what they want their forever ring to look like, and so many of the rules of what that center diamond should be have fallen away.

Yellow? Absolutely. Pink? Why not? A sprinkling of sapphires on the side? Yep. We love that, too.

When a woman exerts her own, personal taste on her engagement ring, the result is intoxicating.

Bringing creative elements of color to a classic ring design is a trend we love.

5. Halos and Pave Accents

Even some of the most classic mountings, like the solitaire, are getting creative touches like antique-inspired halos, or secret “gallery-style” pave designs. These are great options for a bride who is after a timeless, elegant look, yet still wants elements that feel uniquely her own.

We have over 3000 mountings in-store.

To put that in perspective, that is more than 10 times as many as most jewelers! I guess you could say we’ve embraced this year’s engagement ring trends… but then, who could blame us?

Has there ever been a better time to get engaged?
